Three kinds of empty cell in one column

An unfilled cell in the free-tier column means one of three things: a free plan whose marking line is absent, a page that never raises the subject, or no free plan for the question to apply to. As of 2026-09-22.

Inclusion rule. Entries illustrating the reasons a free-tier value can be absent or read from an absence. The third reason has no row anywhere here by construction: a vendor whose pages never raise marking is not given one at all. Order. Alphabetical by generator name.

1The three cases, and what separates them

A free plan exists and the marking line sits against the paid columns only: that is an omission, and on a feature grid it is built to be read as an exclusion. A vendor's pages never raise marking at all: that is silence, and no row is invented from the shape of a grid. A pricing page starts at a paid plan: the question has no subject.

The three are not degrees of the same thing. The first is a reading that has to be redone whenever a layout moves. The second is a fact about what a company has chosen to publish. The third is a fact about the commercial structure of the product, and it is the only one that cannot change without the pricing page changing.

2What each one implies about material in circulation

An omission means marked files exist and the vendor has not described them. Silence means nothing is known either way. No free plan means every file from the product came from a subscription, so there is no population of marked material for a later project to inherit and no contributor question to settle.

That last case is the firmest statement in the column and the least informative, because it describes the fewest files. A reader scanning for risk wants the distinction; a reader scanning for documentation quality wants the opposite ordering, which is a good reason for the column not to be a score.

3Why the register refuses the single dash

A dash is what a table wants: one glyph, one meaning, tidy. It would turn the most useful information in this column into noise, because a reader cannot act on not applicable and unknown and not offered in the same way. The cell text names which of the three it is, at the cost of being longer than a dash.

The same discipline runs through the file-contents column, where twelve entries record not documented rather than a blank. A blank invites a reader to assume an oversight; a stated position says the pages were read and this is what they carry.
