1What a switch can do that a plan benefit cannot

A subscription puts every file made under it into one state. A switch can be set per delivery: marked files for a client review and clean files for the master, from one account, on the same afternoon. No plan-gated row in this register offers that, because a plan is not something anybody changes between two exports.

The register keeps this column separate from the crossing point for exactly this reason. Whether the mark can come off is a question about money on ten rows; what has to happen for it to come off is a question about process, and a production organises around the second rather than budgeting for it.

2The thing a switch destroys is the record

When the mark is tied to a subscription, the state of a file can be recovered months afterwards from an invoice. A switch leaves nothing behind. A team that wants to know which state a given episode came out of has to have written it down at the time, and nobody writes that down at the time.

That is the trade in full: finer control, no audit trail. On a project collecting footage from several contributors the plan-gated arrangement is actually easier to reason about, because the answer is in the billing record and cannot be changed by somebody clicking the wrong thing.

3A reason for the switch that is not about price

The guide gives a case for turning the mark off, and it is operational: if the publishing platform adds a label of its own, two labels end up on the same frame. That is the only condition attached to the switch anywhere on the page, and it is an argument about destinations.

The default is the other half of the value. The switch is documented as on until somebody turns it off, so the ordinary outcome is a marked deliverable. A default can be changed once and forgotten, which means the state of a file depends on a decision taken at an unknown earlier time.
